Purpose

To protect the Antarctic environment, particularly by implementing the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty.

Reason of Hearing

Where an Environmental Protection Compliance Order (EPCO) has been issued, the person to whom the EPCO was directed may request a review (s. 37.09 of AEPA).

Review Officer's Role

The Review Officer may confirm or cancel the EPCO, or amend, suspend, add or delete a term or condition of the EPCO (s. 37.12 of AEPA and s. 263 of CEPA).

Next Steps

The Minister or the person to whom the EPCO was directed may appeal the decision of the Review Officer to the Federal Court - Trial Division (s. 37.12 of AEPA and s. 269 of CEPA).
